Makalu Base Camp Trekking is considered one of the challenging treks in Nepal. Mount Makalu, being the fifth highest mountain in the world, for sure offers you the rewarding experience in Nepal Himalayas. Makalu Base Camp Trek is also one of the most popular trekking in Nepal. Actually, Makalu Base Camp Trek is utterly marvelous trekking in the untouched and irregular trails in Makalu Region. Makalu is the close neighbor of Mount Everest and is located in the northern region of Nepal. Mount Makalu is protected by Makalu Barun National Park and is established in 1992 covering the Barun Valley which is the part of huge international protected under the pact of China and Nepal Government. Makalu Barun National Park possesses a large variety of common as well as endangered flora and fauna.

We begin Makalu Base Camp Trekking from Tumlingtar. We can reach Tumlingtar via an hour-long flight from Kathmandu. Chichila indeed is the point where we begin our actual trek. During the trek, we cross various high passes including Shipton La and Keke La, as well as lakes like Kalopokhari. We rise from the lowland of Tumlingtar on the Arun River to one of the highest Base Camps on the earth. Makalu Base Camp is located at the elevation of 5000m from where we can witness the views of the highest mountains including Mount Everest, Mount Chamlang, Mount Lhotse, Mount Baruntse, and Mount Makalu itself. Details Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and check-in to Hotel

The representatives from World Sight Journeys will welcome you at Tribhuvan International Airport upon your arrival. We then transfer you to the hotel for the overnight stay.

Day 02: Full Day Sightseeing Tour of Kathmandu Valley and Pre-trip Preparation

Today, we spend the whole for the sightseeing tour of Kathmandu Valley. You will have the full day guided sightseeing of Kathmandu Valley covering the major cultural attractions which have also been cited as The World Heritage Cultural Sites. After having breakfast in the morning, we visit Pashupatinath, which is considered the holiest temple of Lord Shiva.  We then head to Bauddhanath, which is also known as Little Tibet and also is one of the oldest and largest Buddhist Monastery in the world. Following the Bauddhanath Monastery, we visit Swayambhunath, the Monkey Temple, which is equally revered by Hindus and Buddhists.   Swayambhunath is an ancient religious complex atop a hill in the west of Kathmandu. After exploring the Swayambhunath Stupa, we drive to Kathmandu (Basantpur) Durbar Square. If time allows, you can explore the city. Finally, you will have dinner at the hotel and stay there overnight.

Day 03: Flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar and drive to Chichila (1840m) – 9Hours

We take a 50 minute flight from Kathmandu landing on a bumpy grass airstrip at Tumlingtar. We then take a jeep drive on a bumpy road takes to the first camp at Chichila. We stay overnight at tented accommodation.

Day 04: Trek from Chichila to Num (1500m) – 6 Hours

We start trekking on a moderately paced walk through the picturesque villages and lush mountain forests. Crossing a ridgeline with great views on both sides and perched on the end, we reach at Num where we stay overnight at tented accommodation.

Day 05: Trek from Num to Seduwa (1540m) – 6 Hours

Today, we take a steep descent down through the forests and terraced plots of land take that brings us to Arun Khola. We then ascend up to the other side again passing through the forest. Now Makalu National Park starts and we have to register our permits. We stay overnight at the tented accommodation right at the top of the Seduwa village.

Day 06: Trek from Seduwa to Tashigaon (2070m) – 5 Hours

Today, we ascend the ridge bounded by the Ipsuwa Khola on the west and Kasuwa Khola to the east. After crossing the hillside through quiet villages, we eventually reach Tashigaon village where we stay overnight at tented accommodation.

Day 07: Trek from Tashigaon to Khongma (3560m) – 7 Hours

We trek upwards towards Khongma today. Well, Khongma is the last stop before we cross the Shipton La pass. We then drop down into the upper sections of the remote Barun Valley. Passing through the green forests of rhododendrons and overlooking the beautiful mountains all around, we eventually reach Khongma where we stay overnight at tented accommodation.

Day 08: Rest and Acclimatization Day at Khongma

Today will be the rest day at Khongma. This day allows our bodies to catch up with us before gaining more height. We stay overnight at tented accommodation.

Day 09: Cross Shipton La and Trek to Debotay (3650m) – 7 Hours

Today, we climb towards the summit of the Shipton La which takes a few hours to reach. We can observe the marvelous views of Chamlang, Peak 7, and Peak 6 on the way and we eventually reach Debotay. We stay overnight at tented accommodation.

Day 10: Trek from Debotay to Yangle Kharka (3600m) – 6 Hours

We pass through the rhododendron forests from Debotay. We then pass through Baruni River and the upper reaches of the valley and we eventually reach at Yangle Kharka. We stay overnight at tented accommodation.

Day 11: Trek from Yangle Kharka to Merek (4500m) – 5 Hours

From Yangle Kharka, we trek to Merek today. As we are gaining the height beyond 4000m, be sure to allow your body the necessary time for acclimatization. We stay overnight at tented accommodation.

Day 12: Trek from Merek to Shersong – 6 Hours

Now, we climb up the valley through the yak pastures and boulder fields. We can witness the good views of the south ridge of Mount Makalu. We stay overnight at tented accommodation.

Day 13: Trek from Shersong to Makalu Base Camp (5000m) – 6 Hours

Today, we walk up to Makalu Base Camp. Throughout the way, we enjoy the superb view of Himalayas. After spending some time at the base camp, we return back to Shersong. We stay overnight at tented accommodation.

Day 14: Trek from Makalu Base Camp to Yangle Kharka – 8 Hours

We descend back down the valley and take the last glimpse of Makalu before turning the morning. We eventually reach Yangle Khaka where we stay overnight at tented accommodation.

Day 15: Trek from Yangle Kharka to Mumbuk – 6 Hours

We continue our descent through the rockfall and then climb up the rock gully to Mumbuk. Once again, we will be greeted greeneries. We stay overnight at tented accommodation.

Day 16: Trek from Mumbuk to Khongma – 6 Hours

We take our initial steep climb from Mumbuk through a forest of firs and rhododendrons and then cross the Keke La and Shipton La. After crossing the Gurung La, we descend to Khongma again where we stay overnight at tented accommodation.

Day 17: Trek from Khongma to Tashigaon – 6 Hours

We continually descend down to Tashigaon today. The descent will be a long and steep one. After cutting across the hillside, we eventually reach the Sherpa town of Tashigaon. We stay overnight at tented accommodation.

Day 18: Trek from Tashigaon to Num – 5 Hours

Today, we retrace the same path that we came by. Our exit is the Makalu Barun Camp. We descend down to Arun Khola and Seduwa again and then hike through the forest to Num. Following the footsteps all the way back down to the river, we climb back up the opposite side of the valley to Num. We stay overnight at tented accommodation.

Day 19: Trek from Num to Chichila and transfer to Tumlingtar – 9 Hours

Once again, we retrace our steps to Chichila and finally return to the Tumlingtar. We stay overnight at guesthouse.

Day 20: Flight from Tumlingtar to Kathmandu

After completing the rewarding Makalu Base Camp Trekking, we take our flight back to Kathmandu from Tumlingtar. Once back to Kathmandu, you can explore the Kathmandu city in the leisure time or you can go for last minute shopping.

Day 21: Final Departure

Today, you take the returning flight to your hometown. Our representatives will assist you to reach the airport. You return to your home with an unforgettable travel experience in Nepal.
